I'm really liking Wicked, haha.

I actually *finished* a fic! Okay, it's part RENT and part Wicked. See, it's a Wicked songfic, with RENT characters. Hee. April, of course, cos I love her. Pre-RENT, since April's still alive :P It didn't turn out exactly the way I'd planned, but.. well, I'll let y'all judge for yourselves. I just hope I got all the lyrics right!

April smiled slightly as her fingers danced across the photograph on her desk. It was one of the older ones, of the three best friends. Before everyone began pairing off, before the word "dating" ever entered their vocabulary. She was in the centre, smiling brightly at the camera. To her left was Roger, an arm around her shoulders and a firm grin on his face as he glanced fondly at her. To her right was Mark, smiling shyly and looking down at himself. It was one of her favourite pictures, because everyone looked so happy.

Hands touch, eyes meet
Sudden silence, sudden heat
Hearts leap in a giddy whirl
He could be that boy
But I'm not that girl

"We shouldn't be doing this," April giggled. The shaggy-haired boy across from her shook his head, placing a gentle finger against her lips. "Shh.." he whispered softly. "You promised to teach me to waltz." Taking her hand in his, he placed his other hand lightly on her hip, and she let hers hover over his shoulder for a moment before setting it down. April took a step, then motioned for her partner to follow, which he did with considerable ease. "One, two, three," she counted slowly, so that they could both get the feel of it, together. As they caught onto the counts, they moved around the living room, their steps growing bigger, bolder, as their laughter filled the apartment.

Don't dream too far
Don't lose sight of who you are
Don't remember that rush of joy
He could be that boy
I'm not that girl

The two friends sat on the couch. April's upper body was draped across Mark's lap, as he stroked her head tenderly. "Roger will be home soon." he reassured her, noting her anxiety. April nodded, closing her eyes. She pictured the pleasant face before her, and a slight smile played on her lips. So handsome, with his tender brown eyes and his high cheekbones. Every time he touched her, she felt sparks fly, and a warmth spread through her body. Sometimes, she felt like he didn't even see her, though. He didn't see the longing, the love she had for him. It was awkward around him, when those feelings invaded her, but she didn't want to bring the matter up for fear of ruining the friendship.

Every so often, we long to steal
To the land of what might have been
But that doesn't soften the ache we feel
When reality sets back in

"In a perfect world, we could be happy together." April told her reflection, as she combed the tangles in her wet hair. "We'd have our own apartment, with a big kitchen. I've always wanted a big kitchen.. And we'd decorate the whole place together, and it would be ours. Really ours. And we could have babies, lots of little babies.. but he doesn't want babies. He says he's too busy for babies." The pretty girl sighed, setting her comb down and examining her face. What was it in her eyes that drove him away? It seemed so unfair, that she could love him so much, and he would still ignore her affections.

Blithe smile, light limb
She is winsome, she wins him
Gold hair with a gentle curl
That's the girl he chose
And Heaven knows
I'm not that girl

The day he came home with some new girl, April locked herself in the bathroom and cried. They were a perfect couple, both beautiful and talented. He said that they were only friends, but they acted so in love. The way they looked at each other sometimes.. it made her so jealous. It was the way he'd looked at her, only her, for so long in her dreams. Now, she saw the love magnified in his eyes when he looked at his new girlfriend. Was that what he'd been waiting for? Someone like her? Someone so all-American, so genuine and pure? April quickly brushed the tears from cheeks. "Just something in my eye," she explained, before walking out of the apartment. She'd never wanted to let go of her foolish dreams for the future, but it seemed harmful to hold on so tightly now.

Don't wish, don't start
Wishing only wounds the heart
I wasn't born for the rose and the pearl
There's a girl I know
He loves her so
I'm not that girl..

For as long as she'd known him, April had loved him. She'd always believed that things would work out the way she'd planned. As she watched the happy couple poring over wedding magazines in the gas station, however, April had to admit that her dreams for him were coming true.. only, someone else had taken her place in them. "Do you think this is a pretty dress?" he asked her as he walked up, feeling obliged to include her in the personal conversation. April shrugged, turning her face away. "Hey, what's the matter?" he asked, reaching over to cup her chin in one hand. Guessing the reason for her discomfort, he lowered his voice, planting a kiss on her cheek. "You're still my girl. My best friend." April managed a smile. "You're my best friend, too.." she answered softly. "Love you," he murmured, leaving her to look on as he took his girlfriend's hand and headed outside. April took a deep breath, releasing it in a shaky sigh as she watched him walk away. "I love you too, Mark.."

I kind of wanted a twist ending, but I'm always crappy with those, haha. Whaddaya think, though? Comments and reviews would be great, thanks.

PS. A cookie to those of you who can guess who the girlfriend was!

Love!
